Wellspring Kids Communion and Baptism

Family Communion this Sunday, Oct. 9.
Four times a year, children in the Go Fish and The Rock classes attend adult church service with their family to observe or participate in communion, something families can discuss with their children.
Last week parents received "A Family Guide to Celebrating the Lord's Table" (info. is also copied below). It is a helpful resource for talking about this act of worship with your child.  In the spring, prior to Resurrection Sunday, classes will learn about Passover and the Last Supper.
Baptism Opportunity for Wellspring Kids
The next baptism services will be held on October 22-23.  If your child is interested in being baptized, please call Jenn Beglinger, Director of Wellspring Kids by Friday at the church office: 860-225-0661 Ext 118.  If your child has completed the booklets on baptism, please give them to the Welcome Center by this weekend (make sure your child's first and last name are clearly marked on the booklets).  An elder and Jenn will meet with your child the following week during the church service they normally attend.  This is a time to talk with children about their understanding and readiness for baptism.  Parents are welcome to attend the meeting.

When should a child participate in Communion?
We generally use baptism as a time where we know that a child has accepted Jesus as their Savior and have followed in obedience the step of baptism. However, once a child is old enough to exercise faith and understand sin and forgiveness, they may be ready to participate in Communion. (I Corinthians 11:27)
As you go through these questions please take the time to look up and read Scriptures. It will help round out your discussion, but more importantly, remind children that the Word of God and the Bible are true.
Listen for their questions. Use this time as an opportunity to pray with them to receive Jesus as their Savior if they haven’t already.
What does the word Communion mean?
It means sharing. We also call Communion the Lord’s Supper. It is a celebration of the last time the Lord Jesus shared a meal with his disciples before he died on the cross. (Matthew 26:17, Mark 14:12, Luke 22:7, John 13:1-17)
Do only Christians take Communion?
I Corinthians 11:27 says two important things: First that we should not take Communion in an unworthy manner and second that we should recognize the body of the Lord. This is a meal for those who believe Jesus gave up his body and blood (life) for us. Also, that we need to take this seriously. It is not just a fun time to eat bread and drink juice. It is a time to take a look at the things we have done wrong and confess them to God. Then we can receive all that Jesus has for us.
Does the Bible talk about Communion?
Yes in the books of Matthew, Mark and Luke it talks about Jesus celebrating the Feast of Unleavened Bread with his disciples. The first day of the Feast they ate the Passover meal. This is the meal that Jesus talked about his death and resurrection and offered the disciples bread and wine representing his body and blood.
Why do we have Communion now since Jesus did this before he died?
Jesus said, “Do this to remember me” (1 Corinthians 11:23-26). It is His way to help us remember how much he loves people and what He did so we could join God’s family. Jesus expects us to follow his example and celebrate Communion often. (II Corinthians 5:21)
Why do we eat bread and juice?
During the last supper, while they were eating with his disciples Jesus took the bread and broke it and said, This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” and then with the cup, which may have had wine in it, he said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” The bread and juice represent Jesus body and blood. (Matthew 26:26,Mark 14:22,Luke 22:14)
